Bankroll Management for Poker Players

Learn the essential skill of bankroll management to protect your poker funds and ensure long-term success at the tables.

Why Bankroll Management Matters

Bankroll management is the practice of controlling how much you risk in each session relative to your total poker funds. Even the best players experience variance - losing stretches are inevitable. Proper bankroll management ensures you can survive downswings without going broke and continue playing when your edge materializes.

The 20-30 Buy-In Rule

For cash games, maintain at least 20-30 buy-ins for your stake level. If you play $1/$2 No-Limit Hold'em with a $200 maximum buy-in, you need $4,000-$6,000 in your bankroll. For tournaments, 50-100 buy-ins is recommended due to higher variance. Move down in stakes if your bankroll drops below these thresholds.

Setting Stop-Losses

Decide on a maximum loss per session before you start playing. A common rule is to stop after losing 3-5 buy-ins in a cash game session. This prevents emotional decisions and tilt from depleting your entire bankroll in one bad session. Stick to these limits regardless of how you feel.

Moving Up and Down Stakes

Move up in stakes when your bankroll comfortably supports the next level (20-30 buy-ins for the higher stake). Move down immediately if your bankroll drops below 20 buy-ins for your current stake. Moving down isn't failure - it's smart bankroll management that protects your long-term profitability.

Separate Your Bankroll

Keep your poker bankroll completely separate from your living expenses. Never use money intended for rent, bills, or emergencies for poker. This separation ensures that a downswing doesn't affect your daily life and helps you make rational decisions at the tables.
